2024/2025 PTDF Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme for Study in France, Germany, China & Malaysia (Fully Funded)

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024–2025 PTDF Overseas Postgraduate (Masters & PhD) Scholarship Scheme. The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), a Federal Government agency mandated to develop indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology for the oil and gas industry, invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for the Overseas MSc and PhD scholarships. These scholarships are available for specific programs at selected institutions under the PTDF Overseas Scholarship Scheme for the 2024–2025 academic session.

The scheme aims to provide candidates with the opportunity to benefit from a diverse range of knowledge and facilities offered by world-class institutions globally. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply through PTDF to specific programs at partner institutions.


  • The award includes flight tickets, health insurance coverage, payment of tuition and bench fees (where applicable), and allowances to cover accommodation and living expenses.

Selection Process, Criteria & Requirements:

PTDF scholarships are highly competitive, and only outstanding candidates across various criteria are selected. Selected candidates will be invited for an interview based on their submitted qualifications, with the top applicants from each category in every state being considered. A selection committee will assess applications using the following criteria:

  • Academic merit is demonstrated by the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, and other professional qualifications acquired.
  • Relevant publications (PhD applicants only).
  • Membership in professional bodies.
  • The feasibility and importance of the study or research plan.
  • The connection of previous studies on the oil and gas industry and the proposed course or research.

Requirements for MSc:

  1. Minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) qualification in the first degree or Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience.
  2. Completion of the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC).
  3. Computer literacy.
  4. Possession of 5 O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
  5. Statement of purpose (maximum 500 words) outlining the reason(s) for the proposed study, its relevance to the industry, and its expected impact on national development.
  6. Applicants must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and are required to verify it (NIMC verification charges apply) before applying for the scholarship.

PhD Requirements:

  1. Completion of the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC).
  2. Computer literacy.
  3. Possession of 5 O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
  4. Minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in the first degree and a good post-graduate degree.
  5. Submission of a research proposal relevant to the oil and gas industry (of not more than five pages) including topic, introduction, objectives, methodology, and mode of data collection.
  6. All lecturers must provide a letter from their Vice Chancellors confirming that they are not in receipt of any other scholarships.
  7. Applicants must have a National Identity Number (NIN) and are required to verify it (NIMC verification charges apply) before applying for the scholarship.

Required Documents:

Candidates are required to scan and attach copies of the following documents to the online application forms:

  1. First Degree Certificate or Statement of Result.
  2. NYSC discharge certificate.
  3. WAEC/GCE/SSCE/NECO outcomes and their corresponding PINs on the application forms allow PTDF to access the O’level results on the relevant website.
  4. Recent Passport Photograph.
  5. Local Government Identification Letter.
  6. Master’s Degree Certificate (PhD Applicants only).
  7. Evidence of membership in professional associations.

Additional Notes:

  1. The scholarship is for the 2024–2025 academic session.
  2. The scholarship is limited to PTDF-approved courses in PTDF partner institutions.
  3. Scholarships will only be awarded for studies relevant to PTDF’s mandate; candidates may be disqualified for applying for programs not relevant to the oil and gas industry.
  4. The proposed course of study must be related to previous studies.
  5. Candidates who submit multiple applications will face disqualification.
  6. Candidates who have been sponsored by the Fund for a scholarship category (MSc or PhD) are ineligible to make another application for the same category. Candidates who successfully pass the first round of screening will be requested to attend the interview with their transcripts; all applicants are therefore advised to prepare their transcripts in anticipation.
