OIST 2024 Research Internship Program: Opportunity for STEM Students

The OIST Graduate School provides research internships in STEM fields through the Research Intern program. These internships typically run for 2 to 6 months, offering students the chance to gain experience in specific laboratories or learn particular techniques.

Interns will work under the guidance of a professor, contributing to OIST’s research activities. The internship periods are flexible, commencing and concluding throughout the year, with two application windows.


  • Daily allowance of 2400 JPY (weekends excluded, allowance taxable)
  • Free OIST shuttle bus pass
  • Fully paid round-trip air ticket
  • Furnished apartments on or off campus
  • Support with visa procurement, insurance processes, and local registration


  • Undergraduate or master’s program students in their final two years, both in Japan or overseas, can apply
  • Recent graduates are eligible to apply
  • Currently enrolled students need approval for the OIST internship from their home institution
  • Academic background must align with the desired internship unit at OIST
